Small Dog Breeds

What qualifies a dog as "small?" Small dogs are generally going to be less than 22 pounds and shorter than 16 inches. In fact, some of the smallest dog breeds such as the Chihuahua can be as small as 6 pounds and barely reach heights of 10 inches! On the other end of the spectrum, larger "small dog breeds" can reach sizes of 30 pounds and 16 inches in height. Despite the huge difference, that's still pretty small. Other things that are characteristic of small dogs is that they often times shed little to no hair. This means less vacuuming and picking off hairs from your clothing. Also, it means less time spent brushing and combing the hair on your dog. Wouldn't it be great to have a maintenance free pet?
If you have children, then small dogs are great companions. They are small, as the name obviously suggests, and as a result aren't overwhelming to a small child. This also means that if the animal ever gets to rough, there is a much smaller chance that harm could come to your child. So, small dog breeds are in fact safer than larger dog breeds. They can even protect your child. This is because almost all small breeds of dog love children and will protect them ferociously. They may be small, but they pack a punch. They are great at barking and growling, even if their physical size couldn't thwart an attacker. They are the "lookout breed" and will let you and everyone else know when someone is where they shouldn't be.
Another superb aspect of this type of dog is that they are great for people with allergies. It's a common misconception that dog hair is the number one cause of allergies in people. However, the truth is that your troublesome sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose and overall bad mood are caused by the dander that dogs shed off (flakes of dead skin). These tiny pieces of dander waft through the air and are inhaled or land on your body, around the eyes, causing allergic reactions. Well, guess what? Small dogs don't produce as much dander. All dogs produce dander to a degree, but small dog breeds have a lot less skin than larger breeds and as a result they are much gentler on people with allergies. So, if you are a person who wants a small, loving, protective, low-shedding and hypoallergenic animal- choose a small dog breed.
