Homemade Dog Food Recipes - What Essential Ingredients Should Be Included?

For a healthy, happy, lively and energetic dog, it's important to use the right amounts of the right ingredients and prepare homemade dog food that's especially formulated for a healthy pooch.

But don't just use any recipe you find on the Internet to make food for your best friend. Carefully analyze any homemade dog food recipes you are considering using for the right proportions and right ingredients in order to provide your dog with a safe, nutritious diet.

What are the essential dog food ingredients to include in homemade meals for your pet?

The basic formula for a nutritionally balanced healthy homemade dog food diet is around 50 percent protein, 25 percent vegetables (finely chopped, pureed or ground for easy digestion), and 25 percent grain (such as brown rice or oatmeal). Add in some supplements of vitamins, minerals, and oils rich in omega-3 for healthy skin and coat to have your dog looking great as well.

Exactly what kinds of foods should be included?

Raw and cooked meats, cooked grains, eggs, veggies and fruits all make great candidates for inclusion in your homemade dog food. Here are some more specific suggestions.

1. Chicken, turkey, fish and beef- Dogs need lots of protein, and meat is a great way to get it. In fact, meats should make up most of your pet's diet. Ground beef and turkey are particularly easy to use because they're already chopped up for you. It's best to cook all meats, but this is especially important for ground meats as there are lots of surfaces in ground meat on which harmful bacteria can grow.

2. Eggs- Just like for humans, eggs make a great backup protein source. There's too much chance of bacterial growth with raw eggs, so use them scrambled or hard-boiled to avoid contaminating your safe recipes with unsafe ingredients.

3. Chopped Fresh Veggies- Essential and trace vitamins and minerals of all sorts are waiting inside vegetables, and you want to make sure your dog gets a wide variety of them. For ease of digestion, be sure to finely chop or puree them. Go with dog favorites like celery, kale, zucchini and cucumbers. Peas and spinach are also popular puppy pleasers.

4. Starches- Homemade dog food recipes should always include some starch, but many people fail to include it. Don't forget about some energy-producing items like baked or boiled potatoes and boiled or steamed brown rice. Carbs help provide sustained energy that will keep your dog going between meals.

Are there ingredients to avoid?
Absolutely. Never include things like onions, chocolate, avocados, garlic or nuts. Avoid grapes and raisins too. For a variety of reasons and in a variety of ways, these foods can make your dog sick. But there's much more you need to know about what to avoid. Visit the link at the bottom of this article to read a comprehensive list of 33 human foods that are toxic to dogs.

Will your dog be willing to change to homemade dog food?
Sure, but you'll need to do it gradually by mixing the food you have prepared in with his or her regular food a little more at each meal. Ultimately, your dog will very likely be grateful for higher quality food made from the freshest ingredients and prepared using carefully chosen safe homemade dog food recipes.

Don't be surprised if your dog has a temporary stomach upset during the changeover, which may cause him or her to experience some diarrhoea. That may mean you're taking it too fast. For most dogs, though, you can make the change in three or four days, but don't be afraid to play it safe and take a little longer.

Choose the best ingredients you can find, avoid things that are harmful and make the change over go as smoothly as possible. When you start using healthy homemade dog food recipes for your pooch's meals, you'll have a happier, healthier dog that will live longer than those whose owners feed them chemical-laden commercial pet foods.

So go ahead and make the switch to healthy homemade dog food and enjoy those few extra years you'll have with your best friend.

Two Tips For Making Homemade Puppy Food

Homemade puppy food is the safest and healthiest way to feed your puppy. There are two things you need to know before you venture into the world of natural dog food.

The first thing to know is that dogs cannot eat everything that we can eat. Some of our well loved food is actually poison to them. Here is a list of foods to avoid.
  • A common knowledge thing is chocolate but did you know that includes anything with caffeine in it? Also, don't give your dogs any candy.
  • Garlic (raw, cooked, and powdered) is highly toxic to dogs.
  • Onions, onion powder, and chives
  • Mustard seeds
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Macadamia Nuts and Walnuts
  • Mushrooms
  • Yeast Dough, it can continue to rise in your dogs stomach
  • avocados
  • Raw Eggs
  • Tomatoes
Dogs have a much different sense of taste then we do. Because their noses are so much more sensitive then ours is they do not need a lot of seasonings in their food. It's kind of like feeding a baby, use your seasonings sparingly and make the food bland.

The second thing to be aware of is that all dogs are different in their nutritional needs. A tiny lap dog is not going to need the same amount of food that a large dog will nor will a large dog need the same amount of food that a medium working dog is going to need.

The reason that it is so important to give your dog the nutritional requirements that he needs is because when a dog get the nutrition that he needs he lives an average of eight to ten more years and those are healthy years.

Most dogs die a premature death from preventable diseases due to lack of nutrition. Get more information on homemade puppy food.

Making Homemade Dog Food Can Extend Your Dog's Life

Dogs are more than just a pet to someone who loves them. I've owned Weimaraners for more than 20 years, and each one I've had has become a family member, a beloved companion. Dogs are so incredibly dependent upon us as their human caregivers that we owe them the very best. After all, they can't look after themselves. Learning to make homemade dog food can extend our pet's life.

Dogs don't really require much when you think about it - their daily care is just lots of love, some exercise and good nutrition. It used to be that when I thought of good nutrition, I thought that meant buying the more expensive brands of dry dog food - you know - the ones you pay big bucks for at your vet's office. And to be fair, I think those brands are better than the big cheap bags you buy at super-sized grocery stores and warehouse stores.

However, as more news has come to the forefront of the media about unhealthy pet food, we must all really think about what we're feeding our dogs. Every dog needs a certain balance of minerals, protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and of course, lots of water.

Each breed has its own unique needs, but there are some human foods that are poison to every breed. These foods include chocolate, most dairy products, and sweets. Yeast products are also suspect. I have learned not to depend on what is commonly accepted as good food for my dog. Many dog food allergies are making your pet suffer needlessly.

Several years ago, I met a family who didn't have children, but they had 4 dogs. They regularly made batches of homemade dog food and their dogs were super healthy - beautiful coats, healthy teeth, and all the dogs lived well beyond their expected life spans.

After losing one of my Weimaraners at the ripe old age of 10 (not too bad because they usually only live to be 12 or 13), I began to investigate how I might feed my next one differently. I had so much to learn about healthy dog food recipes and how to make the food regularly and not have it take over my life.

I studied and found that although it is a commitment, it really isn't that hard to do, and the ingredients aren't expensive. I think I was paying more for the expensive bagged food. But good homemade dog food recipes were not easy to come by, especially ones I could work into my busy lifestyle.

My Weimaraner, Kramer, is now almost 7 years old, and he's in much better health than my previous dogs. Even my vet, who has been caring for these Weims as long as I've had them, has remarked on the difference in Kramer. I'm looking forward to many more years with him. And I think it will be because of how I have fed him - a healthy homemade dog food diet.

I invite you to click on this link to read more about how to make homemade dog food, including dog treats and investigate the many natural recipes that are available for you to give you precious pooch the gift of a longer life.

Benefits of Homemade Puppy Food

After you make the decision to bring a puppy into your life, there is so much about puppy care that is necessary to learn. It can be overwhelming to keep up with all the basic needs of a young puppy, but feeding him can be easy and rewarding.

Like many things that you buy prepackaged from the store, most puppy food is full of chemicals, additives, cheap fillers, preservatives, and other unnecessary ingredients. Due to this, alternative forms of puppy food have started to become increasingly popular, such as homemade puppy food.

Actually, homemade puppy food is the healthiest and safest way to feed your new pooch, and it's really quite simple to make.

First, you should understand that the diet you choose for your puppy will be a large factor in your puppy's overall health. Poor ingredients in a diet can actually weaken a dog's immune system making it difficult for them to fight off infection and disease as they age. In recent news, there have been many commercial pet food recalls which caused pets to suffer fatal kidney failures and other deadly reactions. This can be avoided if you know exactly what your puppy is digesting.

The commercial pet food companies market themselves as knowledgeable in what nutrients are needed to keep your puppy young, healthy, and strong. However, are you completely confident that the health of your dog is their number one priority? Many large corporations pay big money for advertising that will lure pet owners into buying from them. Just remember, no one will care for your pet better than you so the extra time invested in preparing homemade puppy food is well worth it.

Not only will your pup be healthier with food that you have prepared yourself, but you may find that making homemade puppy food has cost benefits as well. If you make use of some of the ingredients from your own meal preparations, you can save a good chunk of money by not having to purchase prepackaged dog food or special ingredients.

While making homemade puppy food can be very beneficial to your pooch, you need to be aware that some people food can be dangerous, or even deadly, to dogs. Some ingredients you should avoid while preparing your homemade puppy food are chocolate, caffeine, mushrooms, raw eggs, garlic, yeast, onions, avocados, grapes/raisins, mustard seeds, macadamia/walnuts, and even tomatoes.

Have you ever browsed the dog food aisle and noticed that there are different varieties of food for different sizes and ages of dogs? That same idea needs to be applied when developing your own homemade puppy food recipes. Small dogs need different nutrients than larger dogs and the same applies to young versus old. When fed properly, a dog's lifespan can be increased by numerous years.

A good rule of thumb when cooking is to make certain that each meal is at least 1/3 protein, 2/3 produce and some portion of grains. When putting together your new puppy recipes, most cooked meat will work fine like chicken, lamb, beef, eggs, bacon and liver. Produce that is acceptable are things such as peas, carrots, green beans, spinach and broccoli. As for grains you can use rice, wheat germ, oats, and corn meal. Don't pass up the opportunity to make occasional treats as well using items like vanilla, butter, brown sugar, and fruit.

Also remember that canine senses are sharper than ours so you do not need to season your homemade puppy food. Salt can even be harmful to your puppy. Bland and boring is better for your puppy.

While not all veterinarians will agree that homemade puppy food is best, it is still a good idea to discuss it with them. At the very least they can give you a good idea of serving size and how often a particular breed will need to eat and what sensitivities, if any, the dog may be predisposed to. They would be able to fill in the missing details, in respect to a particular breed that you will need in order to properly formulate your very own homemade puppy food recipe.

Now that people are more sensitive to obesity rates and healthy eating, it is only natural to consider more organic substitutes for our pets as well. As your dog ages, natural food can help them stay fit and reduce the likeliness of allergies.

Making homemade puppy food for the newest edition to your family will not only save you money, but it will also reward you with the confidence that you are doing the very best for your puppy.
