Two Tips For Making Homemade Puppy Food

Homemade puppy food is the safest and healthiest way to feed your puppy. There are two things you need to know before you venture into the world of natural dog food.

The first thing to know is that dogs cannot eat everything that we can eat. Some of our well loved food is actually poison to them. Here is a list of foods to avoid.
  • A common knowledge thing is chocolate but did you know that includes anything with caffeine in it? Also, don't give your dogs any candy.
  • Garlic (raw, cooked, and powdered) is highly toxic to dogs.
  • Onions, onion powder, and chives
  • Mustard seeds
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Macadamia Nuts and Walnuts
  • Mushrooms
  • Yeast Dough, it can continue to rise in your dogs stomach
  • avocados
  • Raw Eggs
  • Tomatoes
Dogs have a much different sense of taste then we do. Because their noses are so much more sensitive then ours is they do not need a lot of seasonings in their food. It's kind of like feeding a baby, use your seasonings sparingly and make the food bland.

The second thing to be aware of is that all dogs are different in their nutritional needs. A tiny lap dog is not going to need the same amount of food that a large dog will nor will a large dog need the same amount of food that a medium working dog is going to need.

The reason that it is so important to give your dog the nutritional requirements that he needs is because when a dog get the nutrition that he needs he lives an average of eight to ten more years and those are healthy years.

Most dogs die a premature death from preventable diseases due to lack of nutrition. Get more information on homemade puppy food.

Make Homemade Dog Food For Husky Puppies

One of the best ways to make sure that your puppy is getting the proper nutrition is to prepare their puppy food and puppy treats in your own kitchen. Puppies need a diet that is high in protein, enriched with vitamins, minerals, and fats essential for their growth. The following article includes some great puppy food recipes and puppy treat recipes that we enjoy preparing for our husky puppies.

The following recipes are used for supplementing store bought puppy food. We feed our puppies Wellness Super5Mix: Just For Puppy. This particular puppy food provides the optimal balance of nutrient-rich foods that will fulfill the unique health needs of a growing puppy. Each bag of Wellness puppy5mix is packed with a natural source of DHA. DHA is critical to a pups brain development. This puppy food also promotes bone and muscle development. Another great feature of the food is that the kibble is made smaller to accommodate a puppies smaller mouth.

Chicken Pup Pie

1 small sweet potato

Directions: Boil the chicken breast until fully cooked. Let cool. Steam carrots and sweet potato until soft. Cut up chicken, carrots, and sweet potatoes into small pieces. Use a cookie cutter in the shape of a Siberian Husky to cut out treats. Place treats on a greased cookie sheet. Bake in oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool. Store in air tight container for up to three weeks.

We enjoy baking these homemade puppy treats for our husky pups. They are healthy and really pay tribute to the breed. If you do not want to use the brown sugar in the recipe, you can substitute this ingredient with peanut butter or a small jar of baby food. Be sure the baby food does not contain onion. Our pups really enjoy these treats! They also make great gifts for someone who just got a new Siberian Husky puppy.

Best Food For Your Shorkie Puppy

Here are 6 tips for choosing the best food for your Shorkie puppy!

1. ALWAYS look at the first 5 ingredients on your dog food bag. This will help you determine the quality of the food. Protein like chicken meal and catfish are some of the best sources. Chicken meal is a more concentrated protein than chicken alone because the water has been removed.

2. Stay away from foods that have hard to digest grains in them such as corn, wheat, soy, dairy or glutens. Some dogs are allergic to grains like corn and wheat so starting your Shorkie puppy off on these foods could cause problems in their future health.

3. The best food for your Shorkie should include antioxidants in it. Antioxidants help protect your dogs immune system and will keep your dog healthy.

4. Look for a good quality fiber added to the food. Beet pulp is an excellent fiber that increases the intestinal size and allows more nutrients to be absorbed by your puppy. Fiber also feeds friendly bacteria in the colon. This keeps the colon balanced and in turn keeps your puppy healthy.

5. Speaking of friendly bacteria, look for a food that has probiotics in it. Probiotics are what they add to yogurt and they definitely fight off the bad guys (bad bacteria) in the colon! And, if you haven't started adding probiotics to your own diet, nows a great time to do it.

5. No by-products!! By-products are the "leftovers" after the best meat has been removed. These inferior ingredients get added to many commercial puppy foods. This could include chicken feet, intestines, etc... definitely a yukky thought! Not something you would eat, much less feed it to your sweet Shorkie. So be sure and read your labels!

6. Choose a high quality, all natural food; then there is no need to feed a puppy food. Find a food that is formulated, and tested according to nutritional profiles of AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) for ALL stages of life, both puppy and adult.

Did you know that dogs fed a high quality dog food live on average 5 or more years longer than dogs fed lesser-quality food?
